PLANTING THE SEED IN YOUTH PROJECT: July 2009 - Spring 2011

Funded by the Ohio Hospital Association’s Foundation for Healthy Communities, Dunlap Community Hospital and its partners, the Orrville Area Boys & Girls Club (OABGC), the Orrville Dalton YMCA (YMCA), Orrville City Schools (OCS) and the University of Akron Wayne College, worked to improve the body mass index measures of OCS third and fourth graders. Students were invited to join the Active Kids Club (AKC), hosted by the OABGC, where they participated in a variety of fun, physical and nutritional after-school activities. At the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, the AKC was added to the OABGC annual programming. Wayne College hosts the AKC website.  Fruity Fridays, a combination of nutritional games and foods, were held at the new Orrville Elementary School throughout Spring 2010. Seed funding supported YMCA three Family Fun Nights, which were hosted by the YMCA. Finally, the successful, facilitated playground engages students in traditional playground games with the guidance of a trained adult. Funding for facilitated playground activities expires Spring 2011.

STAYING THE COURSE PROJECT:  Fall 2009 – 2010

The Austin Bailey Health & Wellness Foundation supported the implementation of Staying the Course, a program that provided a purpose, path and plan to new employment through participation in physical activity, enhancement of job skills, maintenance of regular routine, promotion of mental and physical well-being and the development of financial strategies. Using grocery gift cards as incentives, unemployed Course participants completed exercise plans, attended support group meetings and completed community volunteer hours throughout the one year program.

WELLNESS LECTURE SERIES:  2009, 2010

Dunlap Community Hospital, the College of Wooster, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and Wooster Community Hospital joined forces in 2009 & 2010 to sponsor a Wellness Lecture Series. The four-part series, featuring nationally known speakers, was established to draw attention to the importance of well-being and health.

THE WELLNESS CORRIDOR – CRADLE TO COLLEGE: July 2010 – June 2011

Partnering with University of Akron Wayne College and the Orrville City and Green Local School Districts, Dunlap Community Hospital promoted wellness with the financial support of the Ohio Hospital Association’s Foundation for Healthy Communities. Corridor funding facilitated the expansion of the Dunlap breast feeding program.  In addition, a working instruction manual for educators was developed that included suggestions for incorporating wellness messages into daily lesson plans. The manual was presented at a continuing education program for local K-8 teachers. Wellness programming was implemented for Wayne College students – a widely understudied age group. Wayne College wellness programming included no-cost student health risk assessments in Winter 2011.

THE HEALTHCARE COST REDUCTION COALTION (HCRC) PROJECT: September 2009 – April 2012

Dunlap Community Hospital (DCH) is working with employer partners to lower the cost of employee healthcare costs through on-site wellness programming. A Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) grant funds health risk assessments, lunch & learns, quarterly screens and incentives for area employees. In Fall 2010, DCH partnered with Dunlap Family Physicians, Family Practice Center, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, Orrville Dalton YMCA, Trinity Methodist Church and Lehman’s Hardware to present a four-day, no-cost community wellness screening program. A second, community-wide Know Your Numbers event is anticipated in October 2011.  Additional funding for the HCRC project was provided by the Anthem Wellpoint and Wayne County Community Foundations.
